Our StoryLaying down the lawn since 1973
HCT Turf is a partnership established in 1973 by Vernon Hockley and George Cann, to supply turf and topsoil to homeowners, landscape gardeners and building developers. 25 years later as the business expanded Vernon’s son Richard became an integral member of the team. And more recently George’s daughter Stephanie has also come on board. Originally based at Aylesbeare, we moved to our current premises in Topsham in 2012. Our current workforce of 4 also include a father and son, Donald and James, who have been with us for more than 10 years. We hope that Paul will also stay with us this long. Sharon, who has joined Stephanie running the office, is Richard’s wife, so we are very much a family business.
In 1988, responding to the demand for a more professional finish to landscaping projects, the partners researched the production of much finer seed grown turf. For the past two decades, that knowledge has enabled us to produce seeded amenity turf which is hardwearing and smart containing a mixture of dwarf perennial rye grasses and fescues.
To the east of Exeter can be found the type of free-draining sandy loam necessary to stimulate strong root growth for the production of our high quality turf and it is here that it is sown and nurtured.
We operate 2 of our own lorries plus hired lorries as required, to deliver our turf to customers throughout Devon and also into Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset. Some of our largest landscaping customers each buy in the region of 30,000 square metres from us every year because they find that our local position enables us to offer them a flexible service unlike anything that the national growers could. These landscaping companies lay our turf in many hundreds of the gardens being built across the South West by the major house-builders.
At the other end of the scale we deliver small quantities to homeowners, and at the garden centres we supply you can buy individual rolls for the smallest of projects.
Between those two extremes we supply many other businesses and private projects. Amongst these are golf courses throughout Devon, many landscape gardeners, holiday parks, councils, utility companies, schools and colleges.
When the specialist nature of a project determines that a different variety of grass is required from the mixture we have selected for our growing fields, our experience enables us to identify the type of turf needed, a suitable UK producer and the means to supply to site. Examples of this would be the fine greens grass needed for golf greens or large rolls which require machinery to lay. We are happy to simply advise our customers which producer to approach about the project, or source and supply the products ourselves.
All of the above refers to turf but we apply the same principles of service to topsoil. We supply from 2 tonnes upwards by a variety of means. Householders can buy small quantities or we can try to recommend alternatives if even less is needed. Some projects run into the 100s of tonnes. Where specialist soil has been specified we can source it and also look at whether the specification is pitched at the right level, discuss it with your architect and provide samples.
